How to use this periodic table

Hover (or focus with the keyboard) over any tile for a quick summary; click to open the full drawer with atomic data, physical properties, uses, history, compounds, safety notes and practice questions. Every element also has a dedicated page — see the full element index.

Reading the table in ten seconds

Rows are periods — the number of electron shells. Columns are groups — the number of outer electrons, which is why elements in a column react alike. Frequently asked questions

How many elements are on the periodic table?

118 confirmed elements, from hydrogen (1) to oganesson (118). The last four — nihonium, moscovium, tennessine and oganesson — were officially named in 2016.

What do the colours on this periodic table mean?

In standard view, colours mark element categories: alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, transition metals, post-transition metals, metalloids, reactive nonmetals, noble gases, lanthanides and actinides. Other modes recolour the table by property values, phase or discovery era.

Why are two rows shown below the main table?

The lanthanides (57–71) and actinides (89–103) actually belong inside periods 6 and 7, but pulling them out keeps the table narrow enough to read. The “57–71” and “89–103” markers show where they slot in.

Can I use this periodic table on my phone?

Yes — the table scrolls sideways on small screens, and a list view puts every element one tap away. All nine modes work on mobile.
