Discovered: 1797 — Louis Nicolas Vauquelin. Name origin: From Greek chroma, meaning colour, for its vividly coloured compounds.

Louis-Nicolas Vauquelin discovered chromium in 1797 in the bright-red mineral crocoite from Siberia.
