About the Periodic Trends Quiz

Periodic trends are the patterns that run across and down the table: atomic radius, ionization energy, electronegativity and electron affinity. This quiz asks you to compare elements and predict which is larger, which holds its electrons more tightly and which pulls electrons hardest in a bond. Because the trends come from just two ideas — nuclear charge and how far the outer electrons sit from it — learning them replaces a lot of memorisation with reasoning you can apply to any pair of elements. Ten curated questions per round at three difficulty levels, each with a worked explanation.
