About the Valence Electrons Quiz
Valence electrons are the electrons in an atom's outermost shell, and they decide how an element bonds and reacts. This quiz asks you to give the valence-electron count for main-group elements, where a helpful shortcut applies: for groups 1, 2 and 13–18 the count follows the group number (group 1 has 1, group 16 has 6, and so on). Master this and Lewis structures, ionic charges and bonding patterns all start to make sense. Ten questions per round across three difficulty levels, with an explanation after each answer that ties the number back to the element's position on the table.
